Going, going, gone into Disney Vault on Jan. 30

Do the words Disney Vault push you into the nearest store to buy the Disney movies that will be locked up for the next decade? (That is, if you didn’t succumb to the marketing and buy the movie when it was first released.)
Animated films are the target of Disney’s vault, and they are on a 10-year rotation, supposedly to keep the movies fresh for new generations. Of course, the system is designed to increase demand for the products.
On Jan. 30, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will place these movies in the Disney Vault:
** Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray
** The Jungle Book
** The Jungle Book 2
** 101 Dalmatians
** 101 Dalmatians II
** 101 Dalmatians (live-action)
** 102 Dalmatians (live action)
I’m curious what the eBay effect has been on the vault system. Has it quelled the panic some fanatics might have over not being able to access a beloved movie?
Anticipation seems to be building online for the DVD re-release of Beauty and the Beast, which has been under lock and key. No date has been announced, but new Diamond and Blu-ray editions are expected in 2010.
We own Beauty and the Beast — and a large collection of Disney movies — on VHS, thanks to a generous friend. But as much as my children love all things Disney, they are not inclined to watch movies in that antiquated format when they have other DVDs to choose from. I’m having trouble letting go of the movies because they are Disney classics, but it seems silly to hang on to them at this point. Anyone else dealing with this issue?

Disney Cruise Line’s Revolutionary Changes in Kids Programming

Posted by: flirtations  /  Category: Disney, Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line announced that the basic structure of the youth programming for children ages 3 through 12 is changing significantly. Trends among cruise lines that cater to families has been to create smaller age groupings in their kids’ clubs and organize activities exclusive to each Disney has decided to break from tradition once again and is eliminating age restrictions for onboard programming. The Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab, once reserved for 3 to 7’s and 8 to 12’s respectively are now open to all kids in those ranges, and activities are divvied up by interests, not age, which enables children to choose from a wider array of offerings and select those that are best-suited to their individual personalities and tastes. Disney completes $4.24 billion purchase of Marvel

Via AP:
“NEW YORK – The Walt Disney Co. completed its $4.24 billion acquisition of Marvel Entertainment Inc. on Thursday, bringing Spider-Man, Iron Man and 5,000 other characters under the same roof asMickey Mouse and Donald Duck.
Marvel shareholders approved the acquisition earlier Thursday as expected.
Marvel Chief Executive Isaac “Ike” Perlmutter, who owned 37 percent of Marvel stock, supported it. He will oversee the Marvel business and report to Disney CEO Robert Iger.
Iger said the deal can help Disney grow revenue and profits, saying in a statement, “the creative and business potential of this combination is substantial.”
Marvel shareholders received $30 per share in cash, plus 0.7452 Disney shares for every Marvel share they owned. Disney shares closed Thursday at $32.25.
That valued Marvel shares at $54.03 each, and put the purchase price at $4.24 billion.
The deal is Disney’s largest since it bought Pixar Animation Studios Inc., the maker of “Up” and “Cars,” for $7.4 billion in stock in 2006.
Separately, POW! Entertainment Inc., a company led by Spider-Man co-creator Stan Lee, said it expanded a three-year relationship with Disney by giving Disney greater rights to its creative output and exclusive consulting services.
Disney, based in Burbank, Calif., will take a 10 percent stake in POW! for $2.5 million, it said.
Walt Disney Studios’ president of worldwide distribution, Bob Chapek, said it made sense to extend the relationship with the company partly because of Lee’s “knowledge and familiarity of the Marvel Universe.”"
