Google Buys Simplify Media To Power Music Syncing For New iTunes Competitor

Posted by: Flirtation Creations  /  Category: Apple Inc, Google

Google just announced that it bought Simplify Media, a startup that offers software that lets you share your iTunes music across platforms, including the web.
The software lets you share your photos and music using programs like iTunes, iPhoto and Windows Media player. According to the startup’s site Simplify Media “connects people directly with their content, without the hassles of synching or uploading all their files. Simplify users can also share their personal media with family and close friends in a private, secure group.”
It appears that that deal may have taken place in March, when the company announced a “new direction” on its blog, discontinuing its software to users and removing its iPhone app from Apple’s App store.
Google VP Vic Gundotra said that Simplify’s technology will be used to offer a desktop app that will give you access to all of your (DRM-free) media on your Android devices remotely, using Google’s new iTunes competitor on the web.

App Store Now Available Through Facebook

Mashable yesterday noted that Apple has rolled out revamped App Store pages in Facebook offering full browsing and search access for the store.
In the Featured tab on the App Store’s Facebook page, you can see top apps and view the sales charts for paid and free apps across different categories. This is the same information that you would get from iTunes or from the App Store application on your iPhone or iPod touch, but it’s all in Facebook.
Clicking the “Get App” button links users directly to the iTunes Preview or iTunes page for the item, allowing for easy purchase and installation. The new layout also incorporates a “Share” function to allow users to post links to items on their walls. A separate “Search & Share” tab moves things beyond the top apps lists to allow for full searching of the App Store.
Vitrue, the company behind the project, notes that the App Store pages are built on the same technology that powers the existing iTunes Facebook pages and will be expanded in the future to offer additional searching and sharing tools.

Apple Is Trying Hard to Get Its Cable-Killing iTunes TV Deals in Time for iPad

Posted by: Flirtation Creations  /  Category: Apple Inc, iPad

This is curious, at least amidst a massive publishing war with Amazon. According to the WSJ, Apple’s putting its massive newspaper-and-magazine-revival-on-the-iPad effort on the “backburner in favor of focusing on other content,” like its long-festering plan to bundle TV shows as a pseudo-subscription service through iTunes, as well as selling certain TV shows for a buck an episode. The idea being to get the deals in place by April 3, in time for the iPad launch. But! Everybody’s still being wishy-washy on signing to Apple’s terms, just like they have been for the last several months. So, maybe it’ll happen, maybe it won’t.

TV Networks Continuing to Resist Apple’s Effort to Slash iTunes Pricing

Posted by: flirtations  /  Category: App Store, Apple Inc, Applications, Technology

The New York Times reports that television networks are continuing to resist Apple’s push to lower episode pricing for their shows to $0.99, down from the current $1.99 price point for standard definition content. The networks reportedly continue to be skeptical of the value of such price cuts, despite claims that some of them have agreed to participate in a trial of the lower pricing to coincide with the launch of Apple’s iPad.
Television production is expensive, and the networks are wary of selling shows for less. They are equally wary of harming their far more lucrative deals with affiliates and cable distributors, who may feel threatened by online storefronts like Apple’s and those operated by Amazon, Microsoft and Sony.
But the networks do not want to ignore the 125 million customers with credit cards who have iTunes accounts, either. “We’re willing to try anything, but the key word is ‘try,’ ” said a TV network executive who requested anonymity because his company had declined to comment publicly on talks with Apple.
Comments from CBS CEO Leslie Moonves suggested that his company is talking with Apple about participating in the trial, and today’s report notes that PBS is currently running a three-week experiment with reduced pricing on several of its children’s shows.
Apple has also been said to be pushing for a television subscription service that would allow users to replace their cable television service with a package of popular TV shows distributed through iTunes for $30 per month. While networks have also been reluctant to consider such an offering, sources indicate that the possibility remains under discussion.
